We’ve all done it.
Begged, bribed, and finally whispered, “Please just stop” while our toddler sobs in aisle 7.
So what actually works when your two-year-old goes full volcano?
Here are 3 strategies straight from our book that have saved our sanity:
1. Name the feeling.
Instead of “Stop crying,” say “You’re really frustrated because the cereal fell.”
(Toddlers feel safer when their chaos is understood.)
2. Go low, go slow.
Crouch to their level. Drop your voice. Speak slower.
You’re co-regulating their brain with your calm—like emotional Wi-Fi.
3. Use a calm-down routine, not commands.
Instead of barking “Sit still!” try “Let’s do our three calm breaths together.”
Make calm the ritual, not the rule.
What never works?
Telling them to “calm down” while you’re clearly about to explode too. (Guilty.)
That’s why our Calm Down Routine in Part II is one of the most downloaded bonus chapters. It’s not magic—but it is muscle memory. And toddlers thrive on repetition.
